Epilepsy awareness month day 21! A seizure doesn't Epilepsy awareness month day 21! A seizure doesn't automatically mean someone has Epilepsy. Max's epileptologist is a character and said everyone gets one free seizure. Epilepsy is that recurring part and there are many possible causes. 💪💜🧠⚡
Day 9 of Epilepsy Awareness Month but honestly eve Day 9 of Epilepsy Awareness Month but honestly every single day we're aware. I can't believe where we are or where we've been. It's amazing, heartbreaking, and humbling to look back at pictures over the last 6 years. I know we've been through it but it's wild to look back through pictures. We had to record seizures for the doctors so it's a mix of terrible replays of those, so many hospital stays( 5 & 6) , and sweet homecomings & reunions between Max and Frankie (8) and sweet video chats while apart (10) picture 7 I can actually feel- that's me ( and Frankie) watching and waiting for Max while he recovered from from a seizure. We've always made sure to keep things as normal and close to typical as possible even when things were anything but. Advocating and educating is very important to our whole family. I've met an incredible network of other people touched by epilepsy and I am always appreciative when our experiences have helped someone get in touch with a doctor and support that helped them. We're grateful to be where we are and never lose sight of where we've been. 💪💜🧠⚡
Day 3 of Epilepsy Awareness Month: Let's talk numb Day 3 of Epilepsy Awareness Month: Let's talk numbers!! 💜💪⚡🧠
: 65 MILLION: Number of people around the world who live with epilepsy.

3.4 MILLION: Number of people in the United States who have epilepsy.

1 IN 26 people in the United States will develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime. ( Max & I are two of them!)

BETWEEN 4 AND 10 OUT OF 1,000: Number of people on earth who live with active seizures at any one time.

ONE-THIRD: Number of people with epilepsy who live with uncontrollable seizures because no available treatment works for them.

Our tough kiddo is a part of that 1/3. We had tiny periods of tenuous relief at best but never really stable from age 5 on. We failed countless medications and Max had 10 brain surgeries with no guarantees of anything on the table. Epilepsy research is incredibly underfunded. We had no idea and now we know how much research and funding are desperately needed. 💪🧠⚡💜

She has the BEST laugh that bubbles up out of her belly like an old man chuckle and gives the greatest hugs. If her mouth doesn't say it, her face will. Max is at Owasippe Scout Camp this week and I don' Max is at Owasippe Scout Camp this week and I don't even have words for how proud I am of him. He's come so incredibly far from where he was ( seizure/ epilepsy/surgery wise) and it is beautiful to see him just do kid things. He has been earning merit badges and achieving milestones that weren't even on our radar when we were just in survival mode for so long. He's chopping wood, moving ( giant) logs, and the kid who has been busting his butt in PT did a 5 mile hike yesterday with no problem and a smile on his face. Matt is holding it down as an Assistant Scout Master and giving Max space to just be a regular kid I've been happy crying over updates when he gets pockets of service. 🌳🪓🏕️🥾🔥

We are beyond excited to be spending spring break in Hawaii granting Max's Make A Wish to see a volcano! It's been 4 years in the making due to COVID and wildfires in Maui. We got picked up at 3:00 this morning and flew to Vegas for a layover and leg stretch. Now we should be on island time by this late afternoon. Shout out to the dog whisperer, Joe for staying with my baby Blue so we can go adventuring! ✈️🌴🌺🌊🐬🌋🌟💫
1.Max got to meet the pilot and see the cockpit - Frankie was invited too but she was shy, sneaky pics of the boys, and the pamphlet that had Frankie convinced they had announcements out for Max today- they did make an announcement that Max was flying into Vegas and to enjoy his trip. 2.photo fun with the blue cabin lights when we were getting cabin fever 3. November is national Epilepsy Awareness Month! Tog November is national Epilepsy Awareness Month! Together we can get more children to surgical evaluation by raising awareness about epilepsy surgery, the pros and cons of surgery, and the different procedures that can stop or reduce seizures.

I cannot stress enough that epilepsy surgery has saved Max's life and given our family a life worth living. 💪🧠⚡💜🌊

🚨This year a new study showed that cranial epilepsy surgery reduces a child's chances of dying by over 80%!

That's why we want all children with drug-resistant seizures to get to a prompt epilepsy surgery evaluation. There are many different surgeries that can help.

Today is SUDEP Action Day, a global initiative whe Today is SUDEP Action Day, a global initiative where our community raises awareness of Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy.

A chilling statistic associated with drug-resistant epilepsy is that 1 in 833 children battling refractory seizures are estimated to die from SUDEP each year.
But there's hope! ( Our own Mighty Max is proof of that)
Recent research shows that:

⬇️ Cranial epilepsy surgery reduces the risk of death by 83%;
⬇️ Vagus nerve stimulation reduces the risk of death by 35%.

There are many different surgical options that can help, each with the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for your child.

These sobering statistics and groundbreaking research showing the benefits of neurosurgery are exactly why we pushed so hard to get Max into the very best hands possible.

We just quietly celebrated a year of no seizures ( knock on wood!) A milestone we never dreamed of when we started this journey. Max was having hundreds of seizures a day. I truly credit Dr. Weiner and Dr. Curry with giving us our lives and our blue eyed boy back. 🧠⚡💪🌊💜

Max and I are off to Texas on a VERY early flight! It's been nearly a year since his surgery and what a year it's been ( in the best ways for once)! Hoping to squeeze in some fun too ( checking out the new Galapagos exhibit at the zoo for sure!) ✈️
